What is HIFU treatment?
- HIFU treatment is a nonsurgical treatment method that cures tumors using HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) which means intensely focused ultrasound without using knives or needles. It works on the same principle with making fire by focusing sunbeam with a magnifying glass. HIFU, instead of sunbeam, applies harmless ultrasound to treatment. It does not require general anesthesia, abdominal incision, or radiographic exposure and is a next-generation technology that the entire world pays attention to.
Strengths of HIFU treatment
- It causes no harm to uterus.
- It improve symptoms including excessive bleeding due to fibroid, heavy menstrual pain, ill-being on lower stomach, etc.
- It does not incise skin bleeding nor create bleeding or surgical scars.
- It does not harm organs or tissues near fibroid.
- There is no physical or mental burden on patient since it does not need anesthesia.
- Since the treatment is finished within 1-2 hours in most of cases, it can minimize a burden of patient.
- Patient can be discharged from a hospital the day or next day of HIFU treatment and come back to daily life.
Weaknesses of HIFU treatment
- HIFU treatment does not guarantee 100% of removal of fibroid.
- It might be effective for improvement of symptoms, but sometimes it take few months for dead tissues of fibroid to decrease.
- Not all the fibroids can be cured by HIFU.

Process of HIFU treatment
- 01. Pre-test : because not all the fibroids can be healed by HIFU, a pre-test is executed to check the location and size of a fibroid and decide whether HIFU treatment is possible.
- 02. Date of treatment : to fast until the treatment is recommended.
- 03. During treatment : time for treatment might vary depending on the location or size of a fibroid. In most of cases, the treatment takes about an hour. It does not create bleeding or operation wound since it is not an open surgery.
